The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Players will gain the right to contest particular calls made by the official, echoing the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
